A Journey of Friendship, Faith and Cultural Discovery Across Indonesia
Our recent Indonesian Study Tour was nothing short of extraordinary, a journey filled with learning, laughter, new friendships and countless moments of discovery. Over 11 days, our students travelled through the vibrant cities of Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta, gaining a first-hand look at the incredible culture, history and daily life of Indonesia.
From the moment they touched down in Jakarta, the excitement was palpable. The days were full, with every activity offering a new opportunity to learn and grow. One of the most memorable parts of the trip was our two-day school immersion at Kairos Gracia School, where students spent time in classrooms, joined in activities and connected with Indonesian students their own age. The warmth and hospitality shown by the Kairos community left a lasting impression. Despite language differences, it didn’t take long for friendships to form – laughter and smiles bridged any barriers and many students commented on how much they enjoyed simply spending time and learning together.
Their itinerary was certainly full: from cultural sessions at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah to exploring the thrills of Dunia Fantasi (Dufan) theme park, catching the high-speed Whoosh train to Bandung and marvelling at the natural beauty of Tangkuban Perahu volcano and Maribaya waterfalls. Students were constantly in awe of the contrasts between city life and rural villages, as well as the deep cultural traditions that shape Indonesian society.
In Yogyakarta, the adventure continued with a visit to the famous Borobudur and Prambanan Temples, a Javanese dance workshop and even a silver-making class. Students also had time to explore local markets, try traditional foods and experience the vibrant streets of Malioboro, where the sounds, smells and colours of Indonesia truly came alive. It was a whirlwind of experiences that challenged and inspired everyone.
Although the program was busy, the students’ enthusiasm never faded. They showed great resilience, respect and maturity – embracing each experience with open minds and open hearts. Many spoke about how much they grew during the trip, both personally and culturally, learning to see the world from a new perspective and realising how much can be shared and learned through connection.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr Chisholm and Mrs Winarto (and teachers from Mundaring Christian College & Adonta Education), who accompanied the group and cared for our students with such dedication and kindness. For 11 days, they stepped away from their own families to ensure that every student was safe, supported and thriving, truly acting as stand-in parents throughout the journey. Their patience, sense of humour and unwavering commitment made all the difference, and we are deeply grateful for their leadership.
As one student reflected:
“It was such an eye-opening and insightful trip. I loved making friends, learning about Indonesia’s culture, and exploring so many amazing places, especially the hot springs and volcano. It’s something I’ll never forget.”
Another shared:
“There were so many highlights: spending time with the students at Kairos Gracia School, exploring new cities and even trying foods I never thought I’d like! It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
The Indonesian Study Tour was far more than a holiday; it was an experience of growth, understanding, and connection. Students returned home with a deeper appreciation for the beauty of another culture, a greater awareness of the world around them, and friendships that will last well beyond the trip.
“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.” — Psalm 133:1
It was indeed a beautiful reminder that no matter where we go, God’s love and unity can be found across all borders and languages.
